Siwa Oasis: Egypt's Most Remote and Different Destination
2026-08-30
Siwa Oasis sits in Egypt's Western Desert, close to the Libyan border and roughly 560 kilometers from Cairo — remote enough that it developed a genuinely distinct culture, with its own Siwi language (a Berber language, unrelated to Arabic) still spoken by the local Amazigh population.
Its most famous historical claim is the Oracle of Amun, which Alexander the Great personally traveled here to consult in 331 BCE, reportedly to confirm his divine parentage — a journey of several hundred kilometers through open desert that itself signals how much the oracle's reputation mattered even to the era's most powerful conqueror. The ruins of the oracle temple still stand at Aghurmi, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the palm groves below.
Siwa's natural features are just as distinctive: hundreds of natural salt lakes and freshwater springs, including Cleopatra's Spring, plus the extremely high salinity Siwa Lake, where you float almost effortlessly the way you would in the Dead Sea. The surrounding Great Sand Sea offers genuine dune-bashing and overnight desert camping without the crowds of more accessible desert excursions near Cairo or the Red Sea. It's a longer trip to reach than most Egyptian destinations, but for travelers who've already done the pyramids and the Nile, Siwa is the answer to "what's actually off the beaten path."
