Kom Ombo: The Only Temple Built for Two Gods at Once
2026-08-30
Kom Ombo, on the Nile between Aswan and Luxor, is architecturally unique among Egypt's ancient temples — it's a rare dual temple, built with perfect mirror symmetry to honor two gods equally rather than one. The right half is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and the left to Horus the Elder, the falcon god, each with its own entrance, hall, and sanctuary running in parallel down the same building.
The crocodile connection isn't incidental — this stretch of the Nile historically had a significant crocodile population, and ancient Egyptians here worshipped Sobek partly out of genuine practical fear and respect for the animal that shared their river. The adjoining Crocodile Museum, included with most temple tickets, displays around 20 mummified crocodiles found at the site, some remarkably well preserved, alongside crocodile eggs and sarcophagi sized specifically for them.
Kom Ombo also has one of the more unusual medical carvings in ancient Egyptian art: a relief widely interpreted as depicting surgical instruments, believed to be evidence the ancient Egyptians used specific tools for medical procedures. Like Edfu, it's a standard Nile cruise stop, usually visited in late afternoon or at sunset, when the light on the riverside temple is at its best for photos.
