The Egyptian Museum: What Not to Miss in One Visit
2026-08-30
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square holds over 120,000 artifacts spanning the full length of ancient Egyptian history, and it's genuinely possible to walk past its most important pieces without realizing it if you don't know what to look for.
Some of Tutankhamun's treasures remain here (with the largest, most famous pieces like the gold mask having moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum), alongside the Royal Mummies Hall — a separate paid ticket, worth it — where you can see the actual preserved faces of pharaohs including Ramses II and Seti I. The Narmer Palette, arguably the single most important artifact for understanding Egypt's unification into one kingdom, sits in a gallery many visitors walk straight past.
Realistically, plan 2–3 focused hours rather than trying to see everything — the collection is too large for one visit to cover completely, and a guided tour genuinely earns its cost here, since very little is labeled with the depth of context a specialist can add. It's an older museum by international standards, and that's part of its appeal: dense, slightly chaotic, and packed with more genuine ancient treasure per square meter than almost anywhere else on Earth.
