Islamic Cairo: A City of a Thousand Minarets
2026-08-30
Islamic Cairo — the historic core founded in 969 CE around what's now the Al-Hussein and Khan el-Khalili area — holds the second-largest concentration of historic Islamic architecture in the world, with over 600 officially registered monuments including mosques, madrasas, mausoleums and old city gates, most within walking distance of each other.
Cairo earned the nickname "City of a Thousand Minarets" for real reasons: over a thousand years, successive dynasties — Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, Ottoman — each added their own mosques and monuments, layering distinct architectural styles across the same few square kilometers. The Sultan Hassan Mosque, built in the 1300s, is considered one of the finest examples of Mamluk architecture anywhere, with a courtyard and dome that still function as an active place of worship today, not a roped-off museum piece.
Most visitors to Cairo see the pyramids and maybe the Egyptian Museum, then skip this district entirely — which is a genuine miss, since it's one of the few places where medieval Islamic Cairo is still a living, working neighborhood rather than a preserved ruin. Walking from Bab Zuweila (one of the original city gates) through the old spice and metalwork markets toward Al-Azhar Mosque — founded in 970 CE and still an active center of Islamic learning — covers roughly a thousand years of continuous urban history in about two hours on foot.
