Mountain of the Dead Tour

From €15

Gebel al-Mawta, the Mountain of the Dead, is a hill on the edge of Siwa town riddled with rock-cut tombs from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Several tombs retain strikingly well-preserved original wall paintings, offering a rare, direct look at how these communities decorated their burial chambers far from the Nile Valley's better-known necropolises.

The site has a more recent layer of history too — locals used the tombs as air-raid shelters during WWII, and some tombs still bear graffiti from that period.

A relatively quick, easy visit that's usually paired with the Oracle Temple or Cleopatra's Bath for a fuller half-day.
