Buses typically leave Sharm around 11 pm, reaching St Catherine by 1:30 am. From there it's a choice between the 3,750-step Steps of Repentance or the gentler Camel Path — both converge near the top for a final steep stretch on foot.

The summit sits at 2,285 metres, and even in summer it's genuinely cold before dawn; a jacket is not optional. Small stone shelters near the top rent blankets and sell hot tea while the sky starts to lighten over the Sinai range.

Most trips build in a couple of hours' rest before or after the climb and pair it with a visit to St Catherine's Monastery once it opens, since the two sit only a short walk apart.
