Abu Simbel sits about 280 km south of Aswan, near the border with Sudan, and is one of the single most awe-inspiring sights in Egypt: four seated statues of Ramses II, each roughly 20 metres tall, carved directly into a sandstone cliff face over 3,200 years ago. When the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge the temple under Lake Nasser in the 1960s, an international UNESCO campaign cut the entire monument into massive blocks and reassembled it, in exact alignment, on higher ground.
Most visitors join an early-morning road convoy (about 3-3.5 hours each way) or take a short flight for a faster round trip. Either way, the scale of the statues up close — and the story of how they got to where they now stand — makes this one of Egypt's most memorable single-day excursions.
Bring plenty of water and sun protection; there's very little shade at the site itself.
