The Citadel of Cairo: A Fortress with 800 Years of History
2026-08-30
The Citadel of Cairo was built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) starting in 1176 CE, primarily as a defensive response to the Crusader threat — a medieval fortress on a limestone spur that gave clear sightlines over the city and the surrounding desert approaches. What began as pure military infrastructure ended up becoming the seat of Egypt's rulers for nearly 700 years, through the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods.
Its most photographed feature today is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, built in the 1830s in Ottoman style with a distinctive silhouette of domes and twin minarets, sometimes nicknamed the "Alabaster Mosque" for its interior cladding. It sits in visible contrast to the older Mamluk-style mosques elsewhere in the complex, making the Citadel a useful single-site overview of several centuries of Islamic architectural styles without needing to travel across the city.
The other major draw is the view: the Citadel sits on genuinely elevated ground, and its terraces give one of the widest panoramic views over Old Cairo and, on a clear day, the pyramids of Giza in the distance — a rare spot where you can visually connect Cairo's Islamic and pharaonic history in a single glance.
