Abu Simbel: The Temple Egypt Moved to Save
2026-08-30
Abu Simbel, near Egypt's southern border with Sudan, is a pair of massive rock-cut temples built by Ramses II around 1264 BCE — the larger one fronted by four seated statues of Ramses himself, each over 20 meters tall.
What makes it a genuinely remarkable story rather than just an impressive ruin is the 1960s rescue operation. The construction of the Aswan High Dam would have submerged the temples permanently under the rising waters of Lake Nasser. Between 1964 and 1968, an international UNESCO-led team cut the entire complex into more than 1,000 blocks, some weighing up to 30 tons, and reassembled it 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from the original site — rebuilt with such precision that the temple's twice-yearly solar alignment, when sunlight reaches deep into the inner sanctuary to illuminate the statues, still happens almost exactly as it did in antiquity.
Getting there takes commitment — it's a flight or a long desert drive from Aswan — which is part of why it feels different from Egypt's more accessible sites. Fewer crowds, a genuinely remote setting, and a monument that exists today specifically because people decided it was worth saving.
